Discover the idyllic Scopello: from the historic Tonnara and the Bennistra Tower to the natural paradise of Riserva dello Zingaro.
Located in the picturesque northwest of Sicily, the charming village of Scopello is well-known for its unique atmosphere and the iconic Tonnara di Scopello. Originally built in the 13th century, the Tonnara is one of the region’s oldest tuna factories and offers a spectacular view of the crystal-clear, turquoise waters of the Mediterranean. Visitors should note that there is an entrance fee of EUR 15,- per person required to explore the Tonnara and view the iconic Faraglioni rock formations up close, which helps to preserve this historical landmark.
The Tonnara’s unique setting with its dramatic cliffs and pristine waters makes it a prime destination for sea lovers and underwater explorers. For those who want to experience the Tonnara and coastline from the sea, boat rentals are available. Both Castellammare del Golfo and San Vito lo Capo offer boat tours that provide an unforgettable view of the Tonnara and the stunning coastal landscape.
In Scopello itself, the historic center with its Baglio, a traditional Sicilian courtyard, invites visitors to relax and soak in the local charm. Small cafés and restaurants offer regional specialties in a warm atmosphere that embodies the laid-back spirit of Sicily. Additionally, the Torre Bennistra, an old watchtower with breathtaking views of the coast and the sea, is another must-visit.
The nearby Zingaro Nature Reserve is a paradise for hiking enthusiasts and nature lovers. Its stunning landscape features rugged cliffs, hidden coves, and diverse flora and fauna. Be sure to bring sturdy shoes, sunscreen, and plenty of water, especially as temperatures can get warm in summer.
Parking is available both in Scopello and at the entrance of the Zingaro Reserve. The Zingaro Reserve has an admission fee and offers several parking areas and well-marked trails. During the high season, it’s best to arrive early to fully enjoy the beauty of the Tonnara and surrounding nature.
Scopello and the Tonnara are located about 15 km west of Castellammare del Golfo. From Palermo, take the A29 highway in the direction of Mazara del Vallo as far as the Castellammare del Golfo exit.
