The island Lipari as well as the neighbouring islands Stromboli, Salina, Vulcano, Panarea, Filicudi and Alicudi belong to the Eolian or Liparian archipelago (in Italian: Isole Eolie) in the Tyrrhenian Sea. Lipari is the name of the municipal, the island and the main place. The island belongs to the region Sicily in Italy and is located in the province of Messina. Lipari is the biggest one of the Eolian Islands. Today the island (ca. 8,000 inhabitants) mainly lives on tourists. According to this the touristic infrastructure is well-developed.

Most beautiful is the old town of Lipari with its pretty small lanes, colourful small houses, coffee shops and souvenir shops.

The hilly island mainly consisting of lava flows offers numerous possibilities for walks. The sea running 3,000 m deep invites to dive and snorkel.

Recommendable destinations:

• The castle hill with its castle from the 16th century. Inside the castle walls there is the Cathedral San Bartolomeo, today the Con- cathedral Archdiocese Messina-Lipari-Santa Lucia del Mela.
• The archaeological museum mainly placed in the castle with finds from prehistoric times of Lipari and inscriptions in necropolis; other sections are concerned with the classic archaeology and sea archaeology; in addition there is a volcanic section.
• Marina Corta with the Piazza Ugo di Sant`Onofrio and the church Anime del Purgatorio
